FRANZISKA MICHAELFranziska Michael’s designs are characterised by contrast. Structure and fluidity, colour and monochrome, natural fibres and high-tec synthetics are all employed to create women’s wear that defies expectations. Having studied Fashion Design at Esmod International University of Art for Fashion, Berlin, Franziska Micheal set up her self-named label in 2009. She presented her diploma collection, ‘quint[z]essenz’ at Walk of Fashion, Berlin, in 2010.
The collection was informed by Arne Quinze’s geometric sculptures and partnered bold forms with draped natural fibres. ‘Quint[z]essenz’ was awarded the prize for the most creative, unique piece. Counting architecture, nature and art as her sources of inspiration, Franziska’s collections satisfy the desire for a synthesis of culture, artistry and innovation through fashion. This is a desire she recognises in modern, creative women with the financial means to dress individually and the need to live through expression, embodying an avant-garde lifestyle. Experimental play with colour and shape combine to achieve strong contrasts. The symbols, symmetry and patterns of her SS12 collection project notions of futuristic tribalism and utopia.
Structured features are reminiscent of uniforms and insignia, though the delicate implementation of colour and translucent materials instigates an acknowledgement of the elegance of the natural world and its inherent geometry. As in her previous collections the emphasis of contrasts between the organic and the man-made, literalised through the use of high-quality wools, cottons and silks alongside unusual modern textiles, is likely to be the underlying influence to the designs.
